Architecture

Designing for Indian Light

18 May 2026 · 6 min read · Ajitesh Murmu

Light in India is not a soft northern light. It is direct, high and, for much of the year, punishing. A house that ignores this fact will spend its entire life fighting its own envelope with mechanical cooling.

We begin every project with a sun-path study. Before a plan exists, we know where the harsh western exposure falls, where the monsoon wind arrives from, and where a courtyard can pull cool air through the section.

The result is architecture that is quieter to live in and cheaper to run. Deep overhangs, perforated screens, shaded thresholds and planted courtyards are not stylistic gestures — they are climate instruments that happen to be beautiful.

When orientation is right, material choice becomes a matter of expression rather than rescue. That is the order we work in, and it never changes.
